Fares and passes

Paying for the MRT: cards, the Tourist Pass and fares

You tap a card at the gate going in and again going out, and the fare depends on the distance. A contactless bank card or a phone wallet works at the gates; a stored-value card or the Tourist Pass is used the same way.

Your own bank card or phone

  • Contactless American Express, Mastercard, Visa and NETS cards work at the gates, foreign-issued cards included, and so do Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay. You pay the normal adult fare.
  • A foreign-issued Mastercard or Visa adds a Foreign Bank Card Admin Fee of S$0.60 for each day you use it, and your own bank may charge its own fees on top. Check the card is enabled for use abroad.
  • Maestro and Cirrus debit cards do not work at the gates.
  • Take the one card out of your wallet before you tap, so the gate cannot charge a different card. Leave with the same thing you came in with: if you enter with the plastic card, do not tap out with the same card in your phone.

EZ-Link card

A stored-value card for S$10: S$5 for the card, which you do not get back, and S$5 to travel with. Top it up with cash or a card at the ticketing kiosks in the stations, or with cash at convenience stores (they may charge a fee). It avoids the daily fee on a foreign bank card.

Singapore Tourist Pass

Unlimited rides on the MRT, LRT and basic buses for 1 to 5 consecutive days. A day runs from your first ride to the end of that day's service. It does not cover the Sentosa Express, RWS8, express buses or other premium buses. When it runs out it becomes an ordinary EZ-Link card; any balance can be refunded at a ticket office, but not to an overseas bank account once you have left.
